BBC pundit Ray Houghton thinks that Nottingham Forest star Matt Turner had a straightforward afternoon at the weekend. He kept his place for the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
This was a welcome return to form for Turner. He didn’t have a lot to do but the bits he did have to take care of, he did with minimal fuss as he kept a second clean sheet.
The goalkeeper signed for the Reds from Arsenal in the summer. He’s proving a pretty useful signing, although some supporters thought he might be dropped for Saturday after a tough game against Brentford.
Houghton discusses Turner after Forest point
The man who played for the Republic of Ireland during his career was on duty for the BBC on Saturday evening. He couldn’t believe that Turner wasn’t given more to do.
In a bit of a swipe at Palace, he claimed that the Forest goalkeeper was pretty much given the evening off. He said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “What Roy Hodgson will be disappointed with is that being the home side Palace have not forced Matt Turner into making a save.
“I can’t remember him doing a great deal at all. It’s been comfortable for the Forest goalkeeper so far.”
Turner is number one – for now
The American goalkeeper will know that he has to keep playing well. The Reds stopper wasn’t great last weekend against Brentford but he did bounce back here.
Turner didn’t have a lot to do in truth. However, he can only face what’s in front of him and ultimately he went back to basics and managed to keep things simple.
The 29-year-old knows that Odysseas Vlachodimos is breathing down his neck. He hasn’t come to sit on the bench all season and Turner will know he has to keep performing well.
