Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams starred last night as Wales got their Euro 2024 qualification hopes back on track. The Reds defender played the full 90 minutes as Croatia were beaten 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium.
It’s been a frustrating season for Williams so far. He’s had a little niggle that has prevented him from appearing in some matchday squads, whilst Steve Cooper has merely chosen to leave him out of others.
Now, the 22-year-old has given his club boss something to think about on international duty. He played well against Gibraltar in midweek and last night he was at his best once again.
Williams stars for Wales on international duty
The Cardiff City Stadium has become a bit of a home for Welsh football in recent years. The nation have enjoyed some memorable nights there down the years and this proved to be another one.
Wales Online enjoyed the performance of Williams during last night, scoring the Forest man 8/10 in their ratings. They wrote: “Linked up superbly with Wilson down the left. A nightmare for Croatia all night. Would have had a goal were it not for Livakovic’s superb first-half save.”
The chance that Williams had came after a bit of a jinxing run downfield. It was a moment that suggested that the youngster was in confident form and he clearly loves playing for Wales.
Williams will hope for Forest chance
Truth be told, it won’t be easy for Williams at Forest this season. Ola Aina has come in and done a quality job in both full-back spots; whilst Serge Aurier and Gonzalo Montiel both look capable at right-back.
Right now, Williams is nothing more than backup really. Still, he won’t be fazed by the challenge of ousting other players out of the team and he will return to training buoyed by this result.
Forest have options all over the pitch now. As a result, Williams will be totally aware that he needs to continue working hard when the domestic action resumes as he tries to force his way into the team.
