Nottingham Forest showed an interest in signing Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio during the summer transfer window. Now, the stopper’s agent has been discussing how close he came to leaving the Serie A club.
Forest worked tirelessly to add two new goalkeepers to their ranks in the summer. Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas both went back to their parent clubs and that left the Reds short.
In the end, Forest managed to get two international stoppers on permanent deals. Matt Turner arrived from Arsenal and Odysseas Vlachodimos joined on transfer deadline day from Benfica.
Di Gregorio was wanted by Forest in the summer
According to a report by Calcio Mercato in June, Forest were dead keen on the Italian goalkeeper. The player has made eight appearances during the current campaign and has already kept four clean sheets.
His agent has told Sport Witness that Forest were very interested. He said: “The flattery is nice but we decided to renew with Monza which is the right environment for him.”
Di Gregorio has spent three years with Monza after initially joining on loan from Inter. He’s made 118 appearances for the club and does look set to play for a bigger club than Monza at some point.
Forest now in safe hands between the posts
In Turner and Vlachodimos the club look to be well-stocked on the goalkeeping front this season. Both players are the number one for their respective country and as a result, they will both push each other to play regularly.
Di Gregorio would have represented a decent option for Forest in the summer. However, it would appear that his agent had his heart set on his client staying in Italy at least in the short term.
Forest moved on quickly and it looks as though they probably won’t live to regret not pushing harder to sign the Italian stopper.
