Nottingham Forest allowed Remo Freuler to leave the City Ground during the summer. He was included in the deal that saw Nicolas Dominguez join the Reds, with the Swiss midfielder heading to Italy on loan.

Freuler is a proven central midfielder and he captained Atalanta in the Champions League prior to him moving to Forest. He’s also made 60 appearances for Switzerland and scored for them at the World Cup last year.

Now, the 31-year-old is trying hard to get up to speed with Bologna. On Sunday, he was back in action as Bologna defeated Frosinone 2-1 to continue their unbeaten start to 2023/24.

Freuler leaves Forest and he’s slowly getting up to speed

As an experienced player, Freuler was handed the captain’s armband on occasions at Forest last season. However, he did struggle to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Freuler didn’t play in any of the final six games of the campaign as Forest secured their top-flight survival. The writing was always likely to be on the wall after that and the club allowed him to leave.

Following his performance at the weekend for Bologna, Calciomercato awarded him a 6/10 and had an appraisal of his performance. They wrote: “He still has to reach perfect condition but he still does everything the coach asks of him.”

Forest wise to offload midfielder during summer transfer window

The Reds did well to include Freuler in a deal to sign a player with as much quality as Dominguez. The 31-year-old isn’t a bad player but he just didn’t really suit the style that Steve Cooper wanted to play at Forest.

Freuler seems suited to the slow pace of Italian football. That said, the player always gave his all in the Garibaldi and he was a regular in the team up until the final months of last season.

It seemed as though the player held a desire to move back to Italy during the summer. Now, it would appear that he’s settling back to life in Serie A, with Freuler and Forest both now better off.
