He’s had his fair share of criticism but Chris Wood is starting to showcase his quality at Nottingham Forest. On Saturday, he moved ahead of the field – minus Harry Kane – when it comes to one Premier League goalscoring list.
Wood scored two goals against Luton Town on Saturday. In truth, he should have scored a couple more but it was his second goal – a header – that saw him move into the spotlight.
The 31-year-old talisman has now scored the most Premier League headers of players who are still active, if Kane isn’t included. On Saturday, he scored his 12th headed goal in the Premier League and there could be more to come.
Wood grasping Forest chance with aplomb
People will say it was only Luton but Wood can only play what Forest comes up against. The striker now has as many goals to his name this season as Taiwo Awoniyi and he will hope to keep taking his chance.
Clearly, Wood is very useful with his head. His goals against Sheffield United and his second against Luton have showcased that he has the potential in the air and that’s something for Steve Cooper to think about.
Wood does have some way to go in order to catch Kane. He’s scored 41 goals with his head in the Premier League and it doesn’t seem as though anyone will be catching that any time soon.
The Forest man moved clear of Dominic Calvert-Lewin into second on this particular list of goals, as explained during the commentary on Match of the Day at the weekend.
Wood has a role to play this season
The striker has returned to action this season with a serious point to prove. He’s a model professional and has returned to the fold looking fitter, stronger and eager to prove his worth.
Forest landed the player from Newcastle in the January transfer window. He initially joined on loan but made a £15 million move after he’d made three appearances for the club.
Wood isn’t every fan’s cup of tea. However, he’s scored three crucial goals for the club this season and for that, he does deserve some credit. The challenge for Wood is to produce the goods on a more consistent basis.
