Jason Cundy has made a claim about Nottingham Forest live on air after Newcastle lost in the Champions League last night. The Magpies were beaten 1-0 by Dortmund and the pundit urged their fans to get a sense of realism.
Cundy is renowned for being opinionated on his regular spot on TalkSPORT’s late-night show, The Sports Bar. Last night, he had a call from a Newcastle fan who couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
It’s many years since Forest were playing in the Champions League. Indeed, the Reds haven’t actually played in the competition since it changed from the European Cup.
Still, nobody can take it away from Forest that they have two trophies in the bank. Unlike Newcastle…
Cundy backs Forest in Champions League argument
The pundit had a point during last night’s show. He was keen to offer the Newcastle fan who called in a big spoon of realism and he poked fun at the size of the North East club.

Below is a transcript of how things went on The Sports Bar last night. It’s fair to say that Cundy believes that Forest are a bigger club than Newcastle and he was sure to let the Magpies fan know.
The conversation went as follows:
Cundy: Nottingham Forest are a bigger club than Newcastle, aren’t they?
Caller: They’ve been in the Championship for how many years?
Cundy: Sorry – you’re showing how old you are right now. 100% (they are a bigger club than Newcastle).
O’Hara: I don’t know if I can agree with that. I don’t know if I can say that.
Cundy: You’re kidding me. You’re getting excited because Newcastle might get 20,000 more through the gates. You’re forgetting what really matters in the cabinet and you as a Spurs fan should know that more than most.
Cundy thinks Forest are bigger than Newcastle
This all depends on how people are determining what makes a big club. Ultimately, if it’s based on what has been won then Forest are comfortably bigger than Newcastle.
There is sometimes a sense of entitlement among Newcastle fans. Some of their fans believe that because they have a big stadium and sell it out every week, they’re automatically a big club.
Forest haven’t tasted the glory years for many years, however. As a result and in the grand scheme of things, Newcastle perhaps can boast of being bigger than the Reds these days.
Still, this is mildly amusing from Cundy. It’s great to hear a pundit fight the corner of Forest and long may that continue.
