Shay Given really not impressed by £7m Forest player vs Liverpool yesterday

Shay Given has slammed Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner for his performance against Liverpool yesterday. The 29-year-old endured a tough afternoon as the Reds were beaten 3-0 at Anfield.

Turner was added to the Forest ranks from Arsenal in the summer. He cost the club £7 million and was instantly fast-tracked to be the club’s number one; with Ethan Horvath the only other senior stopper on Trentside.

On transfer deadline day, Forest added another goalkeeper to compete with Turner in Odysseas Vlachodimos. The Greece number one will now be waiting with intent as he eyes up a debut.

Given not impressed with Turner

This was a really sticky afternoon for Turner. The first goal saw him parry straight to Diogo Jota who really couldn’t miss. The third was a moment of madness that could now cost him his place in the team.

Forest goalkeeper Turner looked distraught when his misjudgment allowed Mohamed Salah to score. Although Turner did make some strong stops in the first half; that hard work was undone by his glaring error in the second half.

Given is one of the best to ever grace the Premier League and he told Match of the Day 2: “You need your goalkeeper to step up at Anfield as well. (Matt) Turner was probably culpable for a couple of goals. It wasn’t his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt.”

Turner must now lose his Forest place

This has been coming. Although there hasn’t been an error so crucifying as the one yesterday, it’s fair to say that he’s had some awkward moments on home soil recently too.

His distribution can leave a lot to be desired and his performance at Liverpool will give Cooper some serious food for thought.

With Vlachodimos on the bench, it makes no sense to keep Turner in. The Greece number one is vastly experienced and has made countless appearances in European competition during his time with Benfica.

The time is now to make a change. Forest aren’t playing well enough to let an error of that nature slide and it could be time for Vlachodimos to wrangle the gloves away from Turner.
