Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been explaining something that Nottingham Forest have done involving the Brennan Johnson deal.

The Reds decided to cash in on the 22-year-old on transfer deadline day. He joined Tottenham in a deal worth almost £50 million to the club.

Now, Maguire has explained the structure of the deal and it appears to be a fascinating one done by Forest.

The Reds were somewhat reluctant to sell. However, with Johnson a product of the Forest academy, his sale is all profit on the Financial Fair Play spreadsheet.

Maguire highlights intriguing element of Forest deal for Johnson

In the words of Maguire, who knows his stuff, Forest have taken out a ‘posh payday loan’. The club have done this from Macquarie Bank and he explains it further in another post on Twitter.

It’s nothing to worry about it would seem. Some fans were puzzled by this and feared that it could spell trouble ahead of the club.

That doesn’t seem to be the case though, with Maguire informing Forest fans on Twitter:

Forest splashed the cash themselves after Johnson had signed for Tottenham in the summer. Ibrahim Sangare was the top signing, with the player costing £30 million from PSV.

Six other players were added on deadline day, however. Callum Hudson-Odoi was joined by Nuno Tavares, Nicolas Dominguez, Divock Origi, Andrew Omobamidele and Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Club being savvy behind the scenes it would seem

Although there are a small section of supporters who would disagree, Evangelos Marinakis and his team know what they’re doing.

The club is in safe hands behind the scenes and based on what Maguire has said, this looks like a modern-day thing to do with transfers.

Forest must now start to fire on the pitch. Steve Cooper is desperate for a win and fans can’t keep pining for Johnson.

Naturally, a player of his ilk is going to be a big loss. But, he’s now gone to pastures new and the head coach must find a winning formula with the players he does have.
