Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has backed goalkeeper Matt Turner after his error against Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday.

The 29-year-old misjudged a long ball from Dominik Szoboszlai which saw Mohamed Salah have an open net to tap the ball into.

It’s not the first time this season that Turner has made a mistake that has led to a goal, with many Forest fans wanting a change between the sticks.

Odysseas Vlachodimos also joined the Reds this summer but is yet to make a single appearance for the club – with the 29-year-old more than deserving of his opportunity.

Cooper backing Turner to make amends

Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Reds boss Cooper admitted that he has full faith in the ‘keeper to bounce back after his mistake.

“Matt [Turner] obviously made a mistake for the third goal against Liverpool which was a real unfortunate one and one that’s been highlighted.

“It was a mistake for sure but if we weigh up all of the good things he’s done compared to mistakes for goals, then the positives completely outweigh the negatives.

“Matt came in and held his hands up for the mistake because he’s that type of guy but he and we will grow from that and get better.

“We don’t want to isolate people, we want to bring them together because everyone is going to make mistakes and he’s trained brilliantly so far this week and I have no doubt he will bounce back from his mistake.”

Does Cooper go with Turner or Vlachodimos this weekend?

After starting with Turner from day one, it is only fair that Vlachodimos is given his chance between the sticks this weekend.

Especially after Turner’s error at Anfield last weekend now feels like the right time for the Greek shot-stopper to showcase what he is capable of.
