Steve Cooper was happy to let Jonjo Shelvey leave Nottingham Forest during the summer and over the weekend he scored a ridiculously good goal. The player joined Rizespor in Turkey and appears to be doing well.
Forest signing Shelvey proved to be an absolute disaster. He moved to the City Ground from Newcastle during the January transfer window but made just eight appearances for the club.
Things came to a head prior to a 3-2 defeat against Liverpool. Cooper had reportedly told Shelvey that he’d only be on the bench for Forest and the experienced player took major offence to that.
Shelvey scores unbelievable goal during weekend clash
The 31-year-old struggled to prove himself on Trentside. He looked rusty from the get-go and he made several silly mistakes when Cooper had decided to pick him for his team.
It had looked as though Forest would struggle to offload Shelvey. Leeds and Sheffield United were interested at one point but they never followed up on some tentative interest.
Rizespor came calling late in the transfer window and Shelvey hasn’t looked back. He registered an assist in his opening game for the club and now, he’s scored an absolute cracker.

In the 5th minute of Sunday’s win over Istanbulspor, Shelvey took aim from inside his own half. He caught the keeper firmly off guard and the ball sailed over his head and into the net.
Shelvey has no Forest future
After trying for many years, Shelvey has finally found the net from inside his own half. Among Newcastle and Liverpool fans, it’d become a bit of a joke how often he’d tried the remarkable feat.
Forest-owned Shelvey has now done it and found the net from way out. The jubilation was etched all over his face after the weekend goal and fans couldn’t quite believe what they had witnessed.
Shelvey won’t be earning a reprieve at Forest anytime soon, however. He will have a year to run on his existing deal next summer but the club will be trying desperately to get rid of him permanently.
The fact that Forest paid him £80,000-a-week will be problematic from the get-go. This goal highlights what Shelvey is capable of but ultimately, Forest now have better midfielders in their ranks.
