Nottingham Forest-owned striker Hwang Ui-jo was among the goals as South Korea thrashed Singapore earlier today. Jurgen Klinsmann’s team won 5-0 in their latest World Cup qualifier.

The Reds striker spent all of pre-season featuring for Steve Cooper’s team. Amid frustration over new signings it appeared at one point as though he might get a chance.

Hwang was on the bench for Forest games against Sheffield United and Manchester United but didn’t make it onto the pitch. After a host of new signings on transfer deadline day, Hwang joined Norwich on loan for the season.

Hwang scores for South Korea

The talisman stepped up to take a penalty during this comprehensive victory for South Korea. He only came on for the final 25 minutes and he will welcome the chance to get on the score sheet.

Hwang is currently trying his best to squeeze into the team on a regular basis under David Wagner. He’s made 12 appearances in total and has scored once during a 3-1 defeat to Sunderland.

Hwang has yet to feature for Forest in a competitive fixture. He signed for the club from Bordeaux in a deal worth £4 million back in the summer of 2022 after the Reds had won promotion.

Hwang unlikely to ever play for Forest

At 31-years-old, it looks as though Hwang is running out of time to play for Forest. Unless the Reds are relegated, it seems as though the South Korean will be seeking a permanent transfer in the near future.

Hwang appears to be a good character though. Steve Cooper praised the South Korean after he scored the winning goal during a 1-0 pre-season win over Notts County.

Forest have Taiwo Awoniyi, Chris Wood and Divock Origi in their ranks as the striking options. With that in mind, it’s quite easy to see why Hwang was allowed to leave Forest on loan in the first place.
