‘I think’… Alan Shearer shares whether Steve Cooper should be sacked by Forest

Alan Shearer has performed a u-turn and now claims that perhaps he was wrong to rule Nottingham Forest out of the relegation battle.

The Reds lost 5-0 to Fulham on Wednesday night to make it four Premier League defeats on the trot.

Steve Cooper’s position is now under immediate threat and speculation has begun over who might replace him at the club.

Shearer claimed last month that he was wrong to put Forest in the mix for relegation at the start of the season and felt they’d be just fine.

Shearer now fearing for Forest

The discussion once again turned to Forest on this week’s edition of The Rest is Football. Shearer has now backtracked on his claims about Forest from last month.

He said: “It just goes to show, we did our predictions thing a month ago and I said that I think the only one I got wrong was Forest, they are flying, just below mid-table. I didn’t think they were going to be in a relegation battle when I put them in originally but I have to say now I think I am wrong.

“But it’s amazing isn’t it, a month later he’s under huge pressure. We have already seen the first manager go in Heckingbottom when they were battered five off Burnley and there were already question marks in the media about Steve Cooper.

“But, I hope they give him a bit longer because I like him as a coach and I think he’s done a wonderful job.”

Cooper situation epitomises the Premier League

One win in 11 Premier League games clearly isn’t acceptable but not many managers in this decision are ever longer than three or four games away from the sack.

After beating Aston Villa last month, Shearer anticipated that Forest might kick on. Instead, the team has lost four in succession and now Cooper is clinging on for dear life.

It shouldn’t be like this but modern-day football is a sad alternative to its former self. Cooper now faces the consequences if Forest don’t beat Wolves on Saturday.

Shearer has praised Forest previously and he’s clearly a fan of the team being in the Premier League. However, he’s spot on when he says that Forest are firmly back under the cosh in the fight against relegation.
