Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White has lifted the lid on what it’s like to play under Nuno Espirito Santo. The 23-year-old scored the winner for Forest yesterday as Manchester United were beaten 2-1.

Gibbs-White signed for Forest in the summer of 2022 in a deal that could eventually cost the Reds over £40 million. Last season, he scored five goals and claimed eight assists.

In signing for Stever Cooper, Gibbs-White was going to work for a head coach who he knew well. The pair helped England win the World Cup at under-17 level back in 2017 and their relationship was strong.

However, it would appear that the Forest playmaker also rates Espirito Santo highly too. Gibbs-White was just 16 when he last worked with the new Forest boss at Wolves and he’s developed considerably since.

It’s a case of so far, so good for the new Forest head coach. An unfortunate defeat to Bournemouth was followed up by wins against Newcastle and Manchester United, with daylight now emerging between Forest and the drop zone again.

After yesterday’s game, Gibbs-White was quizzed on his relationship with the Forest head coach. It would appear as though he’s a huge fan of him and is excited at what the future might hold.

He told BBC Sport: “At Wolves, I had my best times growing up under him and I learned so much. I had a great relationship at Wolves and I needed time to develop.

“Now, I’ve got that game experience and have matured as a man. I feel we have an incredible relationship now and it’s starting to show on the pitch.”

Tactical tweak has helped Forest star Gibbs-White

Under Cooper towards the end of his tenure, it was all about focusing on the opposition and stifling them. Now, under Espirito Santo, the focus is on what Forest can do going forward.

For starters, he’s got more attackers on the pitch and unleashed Gibbs-White in his natural position as a number 10. That has given him the license to roam and in the last two games, he’s been sublime.

Forest are a Premier League football club and it’s finally looking as though they’re starting to act like one. Square pegs in square holes were evident across the team on Saturday and long may that continue under Espirito Santo.
