‘Tries to be clever’: Paul Robinson stunned by Nottingham Forest 28-year-old

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner let himself down during the 2-1 win over Manchester United, according to Paul Robinson. The stopper was at fault for the goal scored by Marcus Rashford during the win for Forest.

It was a memorable evening on Trentside as Forest beat Manchester United on home soil for the first time since 1992 and for the first time ever in the Premier League era.

Forest scored through Nicolas Dominguez and Morgan Gibbs-White to move five points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone. Turner, however, was left with plenty to ponder in the Forest goal.

Robinson slams Turner for moment of madness

When Moussa Niakhate played a simple backpass to Turner in the 78th minute, he simply had to punt it down the pitch. Instead, he tried to find Danilo and picked out Alejandro Garnacho who teed up Rashford to score.

Boos rang around the City Ground when Turner had made the error and it proved a really unfortunate moment for the Forest goalkeeper. Robinson thinks he overcomplicated things big style.

He told BBC Sport: “Rashford has had a quiet afternoon but once again he is there. All Turner needed to do was clear his lines. He tried to be clever. There was no need for him to try and play a ball into midfield there.”

Turner now facing a fight for his Forest future

The 29-year-old USA number one got out of jail yesterday. Forest star Gibbs-White bailed him out with his winning goal but Turner has cost Forest points before with his distribution.

He’s now had all three games under Nuno Espirito Santo to impress and in two of the three he’s had somewhat uncomfortable moments to contend with.

Espirito Santo was a goalkeeper himself and that could be intriguing when it comes to January. We could be about to find out whether the Portuguese boss truly fancies either Turner or Odysseas Vlachodimos and whether or not he will try to sign another one.

Turner at 29 will want to be playing regularly at Forest. However, the player’s distribution is showing no signs of improvement and he now faces a fight for his future between the posts.
