Nottingham Forest signed Chris Wood and Jonjo Shelvey in January 2023 and that left Newcastle absolutely stunned.

This news comes courtesy of a report from The Athletic.

So, what has been claimed about the arrivals of Wood and Shelvey at Forest? Let’s take a closer look…

What Newcastle felt when Forest took Wood and Shelvey

Well, it’s been suggested that Newcastle were amazed that they’d managed to offload Wood and Shelvey in the same window.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle were left amazed that Forest thought landing Wood and Shelvey for the fees they paid was good business.

Wood earns £100,000-a-week at the City Ground and his loan became permanent after just three appearances last season.

Forest didn’t pay a transfer fee for Shelvey, however, he did cost the club £75,000-a-week in wages, despite having his contract ripped up after just seven games.

Wood could yet prove his worth at Forest but even after seven goals this season, it’s hard to see how his astronomical wage was justified in the first instance.

Forest have lessons to learn

In our view, it’s absolutely no wonder that Forest are facing a fine, or in a worst-case scenario, a points deduction.

This type of thing has been all too common over the years and poor transfer business has finally caught up with the club.

If there is one thing that Evangelos Marinakis could do at Forest now it would be to address how the club recruits players.

A settled structure – that features Nuno Espirito Santo having a say – needs to be evident if Forest are to push forward as a club.

Wood has started to prove himself to his Forest critics this season but the signing of Shelvey proved a complete disaster.

Forest will have to take their medicine over financial fair play and it’s not going to reiterate that better business is required in the way of recruitment.
