‘That’s a new one’… Nuno stunned at something Ivan Toney said after Nottingham Forest defeat

Nuno Espirito Santo has been left stunned by something Ivan Toney said after Brentford beat Nottingham Forest.

The Bees’ striker made the claim when speaking to Sky Sports after the game.

So what did Toney say that has left Forest head coach Espirito Santo exasperated? Let’s take a closer look…

What Ivan Toney said to surprise Forest head coach Espirito Santo?

Well, the flash point in the whole match came when Brentford were awarded a free-kick in the first half.

Orel Mangala committed a foul and Toney stepped up to sidefoot an effort beyond Matt Turner in the Forest goal.

However, Toney appeared to move the ball to the right, even moving the referee’s foam with it – an act that some might view as cheating.

After the game, Toney told Sky Sports: “You have a yard either way so I moved it a bit round the corner. I saw the gap.”

The striker couldn’t do any wrong in the eyes of Sky Sports who were frankly embarrassing in their lauding of a player who has returned from a ban for breaching betting regulations.

Espirito Santo was perplexed by that statement and the Forest head coach told The Guardian: “That’s a new one on me. The law is clear – every situation that leads to a goal must be checked. It’s not even a matter of inches, it’s almost a yard.”

Forest can moan all they want but defensive frailties will be fatal

Once again, the Reds handed a lifeline to a struggling team on their own pitch, just as their fans were growing disgruntled.

For want of a better phrase, Charity FC bowled into town once again – and Forest boss Espirito Santo will be disappointed.

Matt Turner has to be alert to Toney moving the ball and making amends to his wall accordingly.

Likewise, Forest deployed Danilo as the draught excluder and as Jonathan Walters said, he should have been positioned on the end of the wall instead.

Still, Forest boss Espirito Santo does have a point regarding Toney taking it upon himself to simply move the ball.

Forest have to deal with those moments better, however, and must now move on and improve on the Brentford display.
