TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher has made an interesting claim about Remo Freuler after his Nottingham Forest exit.

The pundit has been speaking with the Forest Focus podcast.

So, what has Fletcher actually said about departed Forest midfielder Freuler? Let’s take a closer look…

What Darren Fletcher said about departed Forest midfielder Remo Freuler

Well, it would appear that Fletcher has backtracked a little bit on Freuler after some negative comments towards him last season.

The Switzerland player is currently with Bologna and it was claimed by Tutto Mercato Web over the weekend that he’s now met the criteria to sign for them permanently.

Forest will recoup around £3.4 million for his services but Fletcher actually thinks he could have been ideal for Nuno Espirito Santo.

The TNT Sports commentator told the Forest Focus podcast: “I couldn’t agree more. Remo Freuler is a good footballer. I said when he came, I’d watched him play for Atalanta at Anfield and he was the best midfielder player on the pitch. I watch him play for Switzerland and he’s often the best midfielder on the pitch.

“He came to Forest and he was asked to do something that was not him so that’s not on Remo Freuler. But, Remo Freuler didn’t fit, he had to go and he probably shouldn’t have played as many games as he did for Forest doing the job that he was being asked to do.

“But Remo Freuler sitting at the back of that midfield now in a 4-2-3-1 where you’ve got one slightly deeper he could be absolutely perfect so yes I agree with you on that.”

Freuler the right player at the wrong time

The 31-year-old covered a lot of ground when he played for Forest but ultimately he was never utilised in his best role.

In our view, Fletcher has hit the nail on the head a bit and in Espirito Santo’s system he probably would be more effective.

Forest do look to have got another player off their wage bill with this permanent deal for Freuler and that looks like decent business.

Espirito Santo has given lots of players a new lease of life – most notably two full-backs in Nuno Tavares and Gonzalo Montiel.

In our view, some of the criticism that Freuler got last season was a little over the top and it was always a case of the right player at the wrong time for Forest.

In a team that has possession of the ball, Freuler can be utilised to his strengths, but ultimately that simply wasn’t the case at Forest.
