Nottingham Forest were beaten 3-2 – again – this time by Newcastle United yesterday – but Nicolas Dominguez showcased why he deserves more praise.

Forest lost after Bruno Guimaraes scored twice and Fabian Schar also netted. Goals from Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi proved in vain for Forest.

So, what made Dominguez so special for Forest during the 3-2 defeat? We’ve taken a closer look at how the Argentine performed yesterday…

Nicolas Dominguez proves why he shouldn’t be dropped by Forest

Add it to the list, but dropping Dominguez was another blemish on the copybook of Steve Cooper who had shunted him out of contention prior to his departure.

Since Ibrahim Sangare headed off to the African Cup of Nations, Dominguez has grasped his chance to stake his claim for a place in the team once again.

Dominguez will see his Forest place come into question again next week when it appears that Sangare will be back in contention.

Ivory Coast play in the African Cup of Nations final today and after that, the midfielder will return to Forest.

Yesterday, Dominguez partnered with Ryan Yates at the heart of the Forest engine room and given how the pair played, it shouldn’t be Dominguez who comes out of the team.

Who Scored showcases exactly why Dominguez shouldn’t be dropped.

The 26-year-old had more touches of the ball than any other Forest player with 65. For context, his midfield partner in crime, Yates had just nine fewer touches than goalkeeper Matz Sels with 38 touches.

Dominguez used the ball well too. He had a pass success ratio of 90%, the most of any Forest player who started the match.

Defensively he was sound too. The Argentine won three tackles and also threw a clearance in for good measure.

Perhaps crucially, he didn’t give a single foul away either, with Yates making four – the most of any player on the pitch for either team yesterday.

Dominguez can star at the City Ground

Some supporters like to talk about how bad some of the recruitment has been at Forest but Dominguez is a firm positive.

The 25-year-old with 11 caps for Argentine cost just £8.5 million from Bologna and he’s now starting to showcase his talent.

With his socks rolled down the ankles, akin to Jack Grealish, Dominguez looks like a rough and ready sort of player.

His style, however, is far from that and yesterday, despite defeat, he looked stylish, energetic and gave every ounce of effort for the Forest cause.

Nuno Espirito Santo will have some big decisions to make in the coming weeks.

However, the head coach simply has to keep Dominguez in the Forest team and yesterday, he highlighted that he’s becoming undroppable.
