Mark Clattenburg has delivered his verdict on whether or not Nottingham Forest should have been awarded a penalty against Newcastle.
The man who has previously refereed the Champions League final was speaking to the Daily Mail.
So, what has Newcastle supporter Clattenburg said about the incident involving Forest? Let’s take a closer look…
Mark Clattenburg explains whether Nottingham Forest should have had a penalty on Saturday
Well, it would appear that Clattenburg is just as annoyed at the constant inconsistencies – and he supports Newcastle!
Last month, Liverpool got a penalty against Newcastle when Martin Dubravka was deemed to have fouled Diogo Jota, despite minimal contact from the goalkeeper.
On Saturday, Taiwo Awoniyi was fouled far more than Jota was that day, yet the same referee, Anthony Taylor, remained unmoved.
Clattenburg believes Forest have every right to feel aggrieved.
He told the Daily Mail: “Just last month, Liverpool were awarded a penalty at Anfield when Diogo Jota was judged to have been tripped by Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka.

“Soft though it was, the decision was awarded in real-time. The referee that day? Anthony Taylor, who did not award Nottingham Forest a penalty when Taiwo Awoniyi was tripped by the same goalkeeper.
“It was 2-2 at the time and Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo was right to say this was the moment of the match. Awoniyi had more of a case than Jota. The raised right arm of Dubravka made it impossible for him to stay on his feet, yet Forest got nothing.
“VAR Tony Harrington cannot escape blame as he did not take the chance to let his colleague correct his error. It is no wonder Forest fans are asking why it is one rule for them Premier League’s biggest clubs and another for them.”
Sickening decision costs Forest dearly
It’s good to hear Clattenburg come out and defend the concept that the so-called bigger clubs get more decisions in their favour.
If Taylor is going to be giving a foul on Jota that has minimal contact, why didn’t he point to the spot when Awoniyi went down at the weekend?
The inconsistency is frustrating and in our view, it’s no surprise that some supporters are falling out of love with the game at the Premier League level.
It’s nice to hear Clattenburg slate Taylor and Harrington for their decision and hopefully, Forest can get the rub of the green soon.
