Nottingham Forest waved goodbye to George Shelvey yesterday after the goalkeeper opted to join Dundalk on a permanent basis.

So, what has Shelvey said after winning a permanent move from Forest to Ireland? Let’s take a closer look…

Well, it’s been a long time in coming but Shelvey has finally managed to get himself hooked up with a club that should give him regular football.

The 22-year-old had been named among a list of five goalkeepers in Forest’s 25-man squad and was deemed the fifth choice.

Shelvey spent time training with the goalkeeping group at Forest since promotion to the Premier League but was never going to play.

Last season, he was named on the bench on two occasions and also looked very comfortable during pre-season with the senior ranks.

Now, Shelvey is looking forward to getting some football under his belt with his new club.

He told the club’s official website: “Forest spoke to me when the transfer window opened and said that Dundalk were really interested in signing me.

“I just kept my focus on training and playing and tried to let other people sort it out but I knew in the back of my mind that coming here would be a big step for me.

“I spoke to a couple of the Irish lads at Forest and they told me that the League of Ireland is very competitive and every game is a tough environment.

“It’s time for me to play every week and show people what I can do and try and achieve stuff at Dundalk. It’s a massive club with a rich history and I can’t wait to get going.”

Shelvey right to make City Ground exit

Shelvey needs to get out and play some regular football and at 22, this looks like a good move for the goalkeeper.

The youngster spent time with Wealdstone and Mansfield with limited success at those clubs.

During the 2023/24 campaign, he’s made six appearances for the B-Team, including three outings in the EFL Trophy.

Shelvey was never going to play at Forest and given his age it’s time for him to feel involved in and around a first team.

Dundalk will give him the chance to do that and it will be fascinating to see how Shelvey performs with his new club.
