Taylor Twellman has claimed that he’s not sure why Gio Reyna chose to sign for Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window.

The player has been speaking to Alexi Lalas on the State of the Union podcast.

So, what has Twellman said about Reyna moving to Forest during the January transfer window? Let’s take a closer look…

Taylor Twellman questions Nottingham Forest move for Gio Reyna

Well, it would appear as though the 43-year-old who played 30 times for the USMNT doesn’t think Reyna has made a great career move.

Reyna chose to join Forest in January, despite interest from Fiorentina and Marseille in securing his services.

The youngster had fallen down the pecking order with Dortmund and made substitute appearances for the Reds against Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Now, Twellman has been discussing Reyna and his move to Forest – and it’s fair to say he’s not willing to endorse it.

He told the State of the Union podcast: “If you’re really leaving Dortmund for Forest when six weeks before that, four months before that, Sevilla was the one that everyone was telling me ‘that’s where he’s going to end up. A relegation battle in the Premier League does not suit Gio Reyna. I don’t care who you are and who’s trying to convince me on that – that’s not going to work.

“With what happened at the World Cup, I am concerned that Gio will now be chasing this round trying to find himself when this is the most important part of his player identification period of trying to understand who he is and who he wants to be. He is young enough to still have an unbelievable career, but these are the trying times as a player when you find out who you are and who you want to be. I don’t know if he is going to get that answer at Forest.”

Reyna will hope for City Ground start this weekend

Naturally, Forest will be delighted to get Reyna over the line and he does look set for a very bright future in the game.

However, Twellman may have a little point given that he’s yet to start a game since he signed in the transfer window.

There are 14 games of the Premier League season remaining and Reyna will hope to spend most of those out on the pitch.

The challenge for Reyna is to keep working hard in training and hope to grasp the opportunity to hold down a place in the team when he is handed a start.

Nuno Espirito Santo will be delighted to have signed Reyna for Forest and only time will tell whether Twellman has a point or not.
