Garry Birtles has picked out Nottingham Forest defender Nuno Tavares as a bit of a negative from Saturday’s win over West Ham.

The pundit has been speaking with the Forest Focus podcast.

So, what has Birtles had to say about Forest defender Tavares? Let’s take a closer look…

What Garry Birtles said about Forest player Nuno Tavares

Well, it would appear as though Birtles was largely impressed with the Forest performance at the weekend.

However, he has picked out Tavares as one player who perhaps didn’t always cover himself in glory at the weekend.

Forest signed Tavares on a season-long loan from Arsenal during the summer and he’s had to wait patiently for a chance.

Now, he appears to be the first-choice at left-back under Nuno Espirito Santo and he’s currently keeping out Harry Toffolo.

Birtles, however, believes that Tavares sometimes makes the wrong decision – something which he spotted a lot on Saturday.

He told the Forest Focus podcast: “The only negative I thought from Saturday at times was Tavares.

“He got into some good positions but his final delivery and end product just wasn’t good enough.

“He delayed it an awful lot but that is nitpicking a little bit.”

Tavares needs regular football to get up to speed

Despite these comments, we believe Tavares was vastly improved on his recent Forest performances on Saturday.

At 24, he is still a young player and ultimately, he will only get better if he remains in the team on a regular basis.

Under Steve Cooper, Tavares wasn’t even making the squad all that often and under Espirito Santo he’s been given a new lease of life.

He’s now made 11 appearances in all competitions and on Saturday, he perhaps showcased the best and the worst of himself as a player.

Defensively, Who Scored showcased that Forest defender Tavares was sound. He made three tackles and also completed four clearances.

Going forward is perhaps were Birtles makes a good point and it would be ideal if he improved his decision-making.

There were a couple of times at the weekend when he seemed to shoot erratically or give the ball away.

However, he has improved of late and for now, it feels as though Tavares will be keeping his Forest place.
