‘Always a concern’… International boss is worried 29-year-old isn’t playing for Nottingham Forest

USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter is growing concerned that Nottingham Forest aren’t picking Matt Turner.

The international boss has been speaking to Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union podcast.

So, what has Berhalter said about the ongoing situation with Forest goalkeeper Turner? Let’s take a closer look…

Gregg Berhalter concerned that Matt Turner isn’t playing for Forest

Well, it looks as though Berhalter will be staying disappointed for a little while longer regarding Turner.

The Forest goalkeeper was handed plenty of chances to shine under Nuno Espirito Santo but errors constantly riddled his performances.

Now, the Reds have taken Matz Sels from Strasbourg and he looks likely to be the number one stopper for the remainder of the season.

That is a concern for Berhalter and he’s been discussing Turner’s omission from the Forest starting eleven in recent weeks.

He told Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union podcast: “That’s always a concern. Ideally, we want our players, all of our players, playing week in and week out, 90 minutes and being a big part of their team and contributing each week.

“That’s not always the case. When I talk about ups and downs in our player pool, at one time in their career having these ups and downs, it’s no different for our goalkeepers.

“We’re confident that they have the right mentality to get themselves out of it. You saw Ethan (Horvath) move from Forest to Cardiff and now he’s playing every week.

“And, we’re confident that Matt, and whoever our other goalies are, are going to solve their situations and come out on the top end of it.”

Turner will have to wait for another chance

It’s because of Turner that Forest have an FA Cup last-16 clash against Manchester United to look forward to next week.

He saved the penalty against Bristol City that saw Forest progress but it feels unlikely he will play against the Red Devils.

It feels right now as though Turner simply can’t be trusted by Espirito Santo and it’s hard to see the 29-year-old playing again this season.

The problem for Turner is that his former Forest teammate Horvath is now getting regular action with Cardiff and he will fancy a USMNT place.

If Turner does lose his place in the international setup, surely he would have to seriously consider his Forest future in the summer.

Given that the goalkeeping situation has been a mess this season, Forest might not stand in his way if he does want to depart.
