Keith Wyness has claimed that Nottingham Forest should avoid a points deduction this season.

The former Aston Villa and Everton chief executive has been speaking on The Inside Track podcast.

So, what has Wyness said about the situation that currently hangs over Forest? Let’s take a closer look…

Wyness thinks Forest should avoid a points deduction

Finally, we appear to have someone speaking out with a little bit of sympathy over the situation at Forest.

The Reds have been charged after breaching the profit and sustainability rules put in place by the Premier League.

Wyness, however, doesn’t think Forest should face a points deduction for the crimes they are supposed to have committed.

He told The Inside Track podcast: “From what I’ve read – I have no inside knowledge of the situation at Forest – it seems to come down to player spending.

“It’s such a minor breach. The players they’ve bought have hardly destabilised the whole Premier League.

“Forest are supposed to be competing in the Premier League against clubs like Man City. These rules are not built on common sense.

“When it comes to the practice of implementing rules, we’re finding clubs like Forest are being penalised.

“With Forest, I have sympathy. All they’re trying to do is safeguard their investment and secure their place in the Premier League.

“They bought a lot of players, but they weren’t exactly egregious with their spending.

“All they did was have a fair shot at trying to stay in the Premier League. I don’t really see the need to give them a point deduction for that.”

Forest face anxious wait

It’s pretty ridiculous that this drags out so long and Forest might have to wait until mid-April to discover their fate.

By then any points deduction could leave Forest needing a snooker and that doesn’t seem wholly fair.

Wyness has a point when it comes to naming other clubs in the division and as a newly-promoted side, it was always going to be a challenge.

The most unfair aspect is that clubs are judged on a three-year cycle.

However, Forest are being punished for a particular cycle when they were an EFL club for two of the three years.

Hopefully, common sense can prevail and Forest can escape with a fine – or at worst, a transfer ban.

Right now, however, it feels as though the Premier League will make an example out of Forest and throw the book at the club.

Hopefully, Wyness is right and common sense can prevail.
