‘Different approach’… David Ornstein shares what Forest have been doing out of the public eye since FFP charge

David Ornstein has now delivered his verdict on the charges that are hanging over Nottingham Forest.

The elite journalist was speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast.

Well, it’s starting to all get a little bit interesting after Everton were handed four of their points back this week.

Now, the attention turns to Forest with their defence due to be heard in the coming days by an independent panel.

Hopefully, Forest can avoid a worst-case scenario and fingers crossed that common sense can prevail in the end.

Ornstein has now shed some light on the Forest charges in more detail and he thinks a points deduction could happen – but isn’t definite.

He told The Athletic Football Podcast: “Nottingham Forest have taken a different approach, one that is more subtle and not public since the charge was announced. They’ve employed Nick De Marco and this case is going to be heard next week.

“Because they spent two of the three years of this cycle in the Championship their permitted losses are lower. When they came up to the Premier League they spent very heavily on players.

“They received an offer or two for Brennan Johnson before the accounting cut-off period for £30 million. If they’d have sold him for that maybe they’d have complied, maybe not.

“They knew that his market value was higher so they waited until the end of the transfer window and they managed to get £47.5 million from Tottenham for him.

“They will show as a mitigating factor that they were maximising profit. However, that did fall outside of the accounting period but that will be a cornerstone of their argument.

“Clearly, they’re in a difficult position themselves. A points deduction is plausible but we shouldn’t pre-judge that.”

Club will have everything crossed

Appointing Nick De Marco to defend the club’s corner could be a shrewd move by Forest.

He has a decent track record in sport and hopefully, he can come up trumps for Evangelos Marinakis and Forest.

Ornstein makes some interesting comments. The last bit suggests that a points deduction isn’t definite at this stage.

Forest will certainly be hoping for a stroke of luck when their defence is heard, with the Reds just one place above the relegation zone.

Hopefully, Nuno Espirito Santo can oversee a resurgence on the pitch and then a points deduction might not make too much of a difference anyway.
