Jermaine Jenas has admitted he was surprised to see where Nuno Espirito Santo played Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga against Manchester United.

The pundit was covering the game for BBC One tonight.

So, what was it that surprised Jenas so much about Espirito Santo and his decision over Forest star Elanga? Let’s take a closer look…

What Jermaine Jenas said about Forest star Anthony Elanga

Well, although Espirito Santo did choose to play a strong team, he did make some changes for tonight’s game.

Divock Origi and Matt Turner were perhaps surprise inclusions in the starting eleven – but Elanga’s position caused some intrigue.

With United deploying Sofyan Amrabat at left-back, it looked set up for Elanga to maraude down the right-hand side.

Instead, however, Espirito Santo played Origi out there and Forest wide man Elanga on the other side, leaving Jenas very surprised.

The pundit said on BBC One: “I was surprised that Anthony Elanga wasn’t the one tasked with running at Amrabat. Even Divock Origi has shown him a clean set of heels a few times and that one did shock me a bit.

Espirito Santo call was a surprise one

It was really curious that the Forest head coach chose not to go with Elanga up against the unnatural left-back in Amrabat.

His pace causes problems for most players and even Origi was giving the Morocco international a torrid time.

Elanga did still have a pretty steady game but it could have been a more fruitful night for him had he started on the right.

The 21-year-old is a quality player in the current Forest squad and only Espirito Santo will know why he chose not to unleash him against Amrabat tonight.

Elanga is a versatile performer in fairness and he can play anywhere across the front three for Forest.

It just felt a little bit curious when Forest were chasing the game and perhaps it’s one for the head coach to answer in the aftermath.
