Wayne Rooney thought that Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was sloppy against Manchester United.

The man who managed Derby County was covering the game for BBC One.

So, what did Rooney have to say about Forest talisman Awoniyi? Let’s take a closer look…

What Wayne Rooney said about Taiwo Awoniyi after Forest defeat

The Reds were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United, with Casemiro scoring in the first minute of added time.

It was a cruel blow for Forest who had worked tirelessly throughout the game and probably deserved extra time.

The Reds did miss some chances throughout the game with Forest star Awoniyi particularly guilty of being wasteful.

Rooney did have some praise for the Forest striker – but advised him what he needs to do if he wants to kick on.

Rooney told BBC One: “As a forward if you put yourself in the middle of the goal you will get chances. He needs to take a little bit more care and perhaps make the extra pass but he will get better opportunities.

“He has to be ready when those chances come, if he progresses to a bigger club, he will have to be taking those chances.”

Awoniyi will come again after off night

In fairness, Awoniyi is slowly but surely getting back to his best after a spell on the sidelines through injury.

The 26-year-old hasn’t become a bad player overnight and none of his chances last night can be considered sitters.

Awoniyi is very much an important player for Forest and ultimately they need their main striker fit and firing.

The striker needs to quickly park this performance and be ready to give his all against his old club Liverpool on Saturday.

Forest are facing another fight against relegation and Awoniyi will be integral to those chances.
