Lewis McGugan thinks Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels was one of the standout performers during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The former midfielder was a guest on this week’s edition of the Forest Focus podcast.

So, what did McGugan enjoy about the performance of Forest custodian Sels? Let’s take a closer look…

What Lewis McGugan said about Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels

Well, this always looked like it might be a busy afternoon for Forest stopper Sels but it didn’t prove that way in the end.

Who Scored shows that he made just a single save and came for one catch during the contest – with his save a brilliant one in injury time.

McGugan believes that the Forest player is a decent goalkeeper – but also thinks he’s added something else to the defensive unit.

He told the Forest Focus podcast: “I thought the goalkeeper did very well. He’s commanding, he’s got presence. I think his presence alone has given the defence a little bit more confidence.”

Sels signed for Forest on transfer deadline day in January and is now established as the number-one goalkeeper.

He recently kept his maiden clean sheet for the Reds against West Ham and was very unfortunate not to keep another on Saturday.

Sels could be the number two going forward

For the remainder of this season, it would seem as though the 32-year-old signed from Strasbourg will be the number one.

Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos have fallen below the required standard and now look to be surplus.

However, the goalkeeping situation is likely to be one that Forest look at once again during the summer transfer window.

Given the age of Sels, Forest will likely look for a younger goalkeeper who can hold down the position for many years to come.

The Belgian stopper has done well so far – with his distribution particularly impressive during a recent win over West Ham.

On that occasion, Who Scored showed that he attempted eight accurate long passes and that’s clearly a top attribute.

What the future holds for Sels remains to be seen but former Forest midfielder McGugan is right to praise him for his recent efforts.
