Nottingham Forest haven’t been selecting Giovanni Reyna of late but he’s still been called up by Gregg Berhalter for the USMNT squad.
The head coach has been speaking to Goal regarding his decision to call up the Forest loanee.
So, what has Berhalter had to say about Forest forward Reyna? Let’s take a closer look…
What Gregg Berhalter has said about calling up Giovanni Reyna
Well, despite failing to make his mark with Forest, it would appear as though he retains the backing of his international head coach.
It had been anticipated that Forest forward Reyna was out through injury, although it wouldn’t appear as though that is the case given Berhalter’s decision.
After naming the player in the squad for the Nations League semi-final against Jamaica he’s been justifying his decision to the media.
He told Goal: “It’s always concerning when guys aren’t getting regular minutes but what we know about adapting to different leagues is sometimes it takes a while.
“And, in Gio’s case, he is coming from the Bundesliga to a very high-tempo Premier League. His team in particular is very robust, very high energy on the counter-attack.

“We’re not surprised that it’s taking them a little bit but we believe that he’ll be able to get it done in the end. For us, he has performed well in this last year and we thought that was enough to include him in the squad.”
Reyna can still play a big part at Forest
It’s going to be tricky for Reyna but the hope will be that he can get the chance to start a game for Forest soon.
At 21-years-old, this was always a loan with a development process in mind and settling into the Premier League has clearly proved tricky.
Reyna has played just 38 minutes since he arrived at Forest on loan from Borussia Dortmund and he’s not really had a proper chance just yet.
Still, there are 10 games to go for Forest, however, and Nuno Espirito Santo will want all of his squad to be ready to go if they’re needed.
Clearly, he’s a talented boy and hopefully, Reyna can get a chance to prove himself to Forest before the end of the current campaign.
It’s not a surprise to see the USMNT call him up and hopefully, playing for his country can give him some confidence to get going at Forest.
