Nottingham Forest thought they’d made a mistake signing 32-year-old who is now a star man

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood is a man currently in tremendous form and yesterday he took his goal tally to 12 for the campaign.

Wood was added to the City Ground ranks from Newcastle in January 2023, signing initially on loan and making the switch permanent after three starts.

The 32-year-old talisman was added to provide competition for Taiwo Awoniyi. At the time, the Nigerian was injured and his experience was a big factor in Forest signing him.

Wood didn’t have a great time of things last term, scoring just one goal and missing the last six games of the season with a thigh injury.

Yesterday he scored against Tottenham but after missing a sitter, Wood received a bit of criticism from Lineker who also expressed sympathy for the striker.

Now, some intriguing claims have been made at Wood at Forest and it would appear that some inside the club held some reservations.

Report makes claim about Nottingham Forest signing of Chris Wood

It’s hard to knock Wood this season and without his goals, it doesn’t bear thinking about where Forest would be in the Premier League table.

Wood has been scoring all sorts of different goals and he currently gets more shots on target than any other striker in the Premier League.

A report from The Athletic has claimed that it’s not always been rosy for Wood at Forest – and some of the hierarchy were concerned when he signed.

Wood was fancied by Steve Cooper and joined at roughly the same time as Jonjo Shelvey who has now signed for Rizespor in Turkey.

It’s claimed that this time last year, with Wood having scored just once and picking up a season-ending injury, some of the board were posing serious questions about him.

Now, he’s thrown that notion out of the window and Wood is very much a star player in the Forest ranks right now.

Is Chris Wood now ahead of Taiwo Awoniyi even when he’s fit?

If the talisman can get himself fit this will be the million-dollar question for the remainder of the campaign.

Awoniyi has been the number one striker since coming to the club but his injury record has been somewhat ordinary at best since he signed.

Wood has taken things in his stride since having to replace Awoniyi and he’s banging the goal in for fun at the moment.

The Nigerian striker does have a physical presence that Wood doesn’t perhaps have and he does change the way in which Forest typically plays.

However, right now it’s all about goals and as a result, you have to think that Wood has replaced Awoniyi as the number-one striker at Forest.

If the Reds can stave off the threat of relegation, it will be fascinating to see what happens with the Forest striker department next season.
