Stuart Pearce has now shared what he once did at Nottingham Forest which left Brian Clough livid.

The 62-year-old made the comments when speaking to Geoff Shreeves on The Overlap about his time at the City Ground.

So, what did Nottingham Forest legend Stuart Pearce say about another iconic figure in Brian Clough? Let’s take a look…

What Stuart Pearce said about Brian Clough

The man who made 395 appearances for Nottingham Forest has now told the story of when Clough “shunned” him at the City Ground.

Pearce said: “He would hate you getting sent off. First time I ever got sent off was at Leicester. I tackled the right winger, it was actual grievous bodily harm, the challenge, I must admit now… we come in at half time, and Cloughy says to me, can you keep out of trouble second half?

“I said, yeah. On the 47th minute, I mistimed a challenge on the same kid and got sent off. He refused to speak to me all week. He just shunned me. It was as much to say, if you let us down now, you’ll let us down when it really matters, and it taught me a great lesson.”

Pearce eventually racked up 282 appearances under Clough – scoring 45 goals and providing five assists – so it certainly seems like he learned his lesson from that experience against Leicester.

Times have changed

Pearce went on to tell Shreeves that he only received five red cards across roughly 1,000 games of football after being shunned by Clough – which suggests that particular managerial tactic worked a treat.

Unfortunately, managers nowadays probably wouldn’t see such treatment have the same impact, as footballers have the ability to run to the media to leak stories, while player power in the dressing room seems as strong as ever amid a time where some even earn more money than the boss.

Nevertheless, Nottingham Forest will always have that special connection with Clough, and can continue to embrace the traditions which make him one of the greatest managers of all time.
