Former Nottingham Forest right-back Djed Spence made a rare appearance for Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

The north London outfit kickstarted their pre-season efforts with a friendly in Edinburgh against Scottish Premiership side Hearts of Midlothian.

And among the players to make an appearance was the former Forest defender Spence.

It is now two years since Spence departed Forest at the end of his loan spell at the City Ground as he returned to Middlesbrough before making the move to Spurs.

And it has been two difficult years at that with the 23-year-old really struggling to showcase the form he showed under Steve Cooper.

How Djed Spence performed for Tottenham vs Hearts

After making the move to Spurs, Spence was immediately shunned by Antonio Conte who labelled the Englishman as a ‘club signing’.

Having spent around £20m for his services, Tottenham have not exactly seen the rewards of their investment in the 23-year-old.

Spence has only made six appearances for the senior side across all competitions in two years with a mere 43 minutes of action.

But in the friendly against Hearts on Wednesday night, Spence was given the entire second half to shine.

And shine is exactly what Spence did as he was able to get himself on the scoresheet as well as providing a tidy assist for striker Will Lankshear.

For a player whose loan spell at Leeds United was cut short due to the attitude he was showing, Spence looked like a player who was really trying to impress.

Spurs loaned Spence to Genoa in January and talks have been held between the two clubs about his future, but the 23-year-old played like someone trying to earn the trust of the Spurs manager.

For perhaps the first time in two years, Spurs fans finally got to see the Spence which Forest fans enjoyed for the 2021/22 campaign.

What Ange Postecoglou said about Djed Spence

Tottenham manager Postecoglou loaned Spence out at the first opportunity last summer and then again in January after he returned from Elland Road.

Going into the summer, the defender’s opportunities in north London looked fairly bleak.

However, his display on Wednesday night certainly impressed his boss with the Australian sharing his thoughts on the Englishman’s performance.

“Djed did well. He has had a tough couple of years. He is training with us and I think with all of the players they are here with us at the moment and when they are here with us I treat them as Tottenham players unless something suddenly changes,” Postecoglou told the media.

“He was good tonight. Took his goal well, he contributed well and got an assist.”

Hopefully for Spence’s sake Wednesday night can act as a marker for him to really push on with his career and show exactly what he did at Forest to earn him the move to Spurs.
