Gabriel Agbonlahor admits he’s changed his mind about £13m Nottingham Forest player after his display vs Liverpool

Nottingham Forest enjoyed a weekend to remember as Liverpool were despatched in relatively convincing fashion by a well-organised Nuno Espirito Santo outfit.

The Reds won the game courtesy of a 1-0 win, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring his maiden goal of the campaign to go with the eight he bagged last season.

Forest were brilliant from start to fashion at Anfield. They never let Liverpool’s top stars get into their best form with a number of really good performers on the day.

The Reds were led by skipper Ryan Yates and even before the first whistle he was seen getting the players focused and ready for battle on Saturday.

After such a magnificent win, it’s only natural that some pundits have been raving about the Forest performance and perhaps there is a nod of appreciation from some now.

Gabby Agbonlahor raves about Nottingham Forest star Alex Moreno

After a two-week international hiatus, it was a good chance for Espirito Santo to get on the training ground and start working with the new signings.

Although some players jetted off on international, for some it was business as usual and clearly the squad got down to work.

Moreno came in at the expense of Neco Williams, with Ola Aina switching to right-back and Moreno tasked with thwarting the presence of Mohamed Salah.

He did his job superbly well and Villa fan – and pundit – Agbonlahor praised the performance of the man who is on loan from the club he served with distinction.

He told TalkSPORT: “He signed from Aston Villa. I didn’t think he was good enough last season in the Aston Villa shirt. I didn’t think he was aggressive enough. I didn’t think his pace was there. But for some reason against Liverpool, he was on Mo Salah.

“He got a touch on the ball whenever he needed to. He got the last tackle when he needed to. I thought he kept Mo Salah, one of the best wingers to ever play in the Premier League, very quiet, so I am going to give Moreno left-back of the week.”

Forest tried to sign Alex Moreno in 2022

This deal was a long time in coming from the Forest recruitment team – with the Reds feeling they were close to signing him from Real Betis in 2022 shortly after promotion to the Premier League.

At the time he chose to stay with Betis but six months later – during the January transfer window – Villa parted with £13 million to bring him to the Premier League.

Moreno fell down the pecking order after a hamstring injury curtailed his progress. Now, he’s at Forest and this performance at the weekend was simply stunning against one of the best players to ever grace the Premier League.

At 31, Moreno is hardly one for the future. However, he does bring that element of experience to the squad and with many young players in the ranks, he looks perfect for Forest.

His debut in the Premier League for Forest quite simply couldn’t have gone any better. Now, the challenge is to stay fit, keep the shirt and help Forest enjoy a season to remember and avoid relegation at a canter.
