Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer agree on Morgan Gibbs-White sending off for Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest drew with Brighton 2-2 on Sunday to maintain an unbeaten start to the Premier League season with Morgan Gibbs-White the hot topic of discussion.

On this occasion, it had nothing to do with some piece of ball-playing brilliance by the Forest man but his 82nd-minute sending-off provided a big talking point.

Gibbs-White appeared to get the ball, with the referee signalling as much but moments later he’d changed his mind – on the advice of the fourth official – and sent him from the field.

Now, he faces a one-match ban which will come against Fulham this weekend and Forest will likely be left to file another written apology from the PGMOL.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer agree on Morgan Gibbs-White decision

This one has definitely got the pundits talking and it’s no surprise that it’s been a hot topic for Lineker and Shearer this weekend.

The pair were dissecting the weekend’s football on The Rest is Football podcast and both of them were in agreement, with the conversation going as follows:

Lineker: “I don’t think he can complain too much for that one, do you, Alan?”

Shearer: “No, I don’t, I think it was a dangerous tackle, it could have been a straight red, it would have been one of those that probably wouldn’t have been reversed, but I think when you’re on a yellow card and you’re going to tackle like that, it was no complaints whatsoever it was the correct decision.”

Gibbs-White must learn from the error of his ways

Okay, so a yellow card is perhaps harsh in this instance anyway but in tackling in the manner which he did, he gave the officials a decision to make.

The incident also happened close to the technical areas which is often considered as a third penalty box when it comes to referees making decisions.

Gibbs-White was perhaps a little bit naive to get himself into the situation he did but the process of how the referee came to his decision was completely wrong.

Lineker and Shearer are probably right. In today’s game, tackling like that on a yellow card is asking for trouble but the decision isn’t really the gripe for Forest fans.

It’s the fact that Jones signalled that he played the ball before seemingly changing his mind and going on the say-so of someone else.

That isn’t on and some clarity on how the decision was reached would be ideal.
