Nottingham Forest currently have a number of young players out on loan sampling men’s football for the first time.

The Reds have Premier League 2 football on the agenda for their B-Team but some youngsters have outgrown that.

Last season, the Forest B-Team performed well with a number of strong performers across the campaign.

One of those was Jamie McDonnell who captained the team all season and operated in a number of positions.

He scored three goals and claimed two assists from 23 appearances for Warren Joyce’s B-Team.

At 20 it was always likely that he would be one of the talents to head out on loan this season and a move to Colchester was secured for the Forest talent in the summer.

Jamie McDonnell scores a last-gasp Colchester goal

It had looked as though Bradford were on the verge of beating Colchester but an additional 10 minutes on the board gave the hosts hope.

With nine of the additional minutes on the clock, McDonnell was left unmarked at the back post and nodded home to earn the U’s a priceless point.

McDonnell was operating in the middle of the park and the joy was there for all to see after he netted his maiden senior goal.

The Colchester Gazette gave McDonnell a 5/10 for his performance – despite his late equalising goal.

They wrote: ‘Covered a lot of ground and showed tenacity on a difficult day for Colchester.’

McDonnell will hope to impress Forest during Colchester loan

It’s taken a little while but Danny Cowley is not trusting McDonnell to play regular football at Colchester.

The versatile performer has a lot of strings to his bow and he’s already shown that he can play in a number of positions.

At 20, McDonnell will still hope to impress Forest and the dream of playing first-team football at the City Ground will be alive in his mind.

His goal yesterday was a brilliant back post header and clearly he looks competent enough to play regularly in League Two.

McDonnell is rated highly at the City Ground and clearly being loaned out was part of his development.

The challenge now is to consistently pop up with strong performances and potentially add even more goals to his game.
