Nottingham Forest defeated Manchester City yesterday to go four points clear of the reigning champions with just 10 matches of the 2024/25 campaign remaining.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the game’s only goal with just seven minutes of the game remaining, lashing home after a rather scintillating cross-field pass from Morgan Gibbs-White.

Nuno Espirito Santo celebrated afterwards in the dressing room and frankly this was a mastermind of a performance from the Forest head coach as he managed to topple Pep Guardiola.

The Reds returned to winning ways after two defeats and a 0-0 draw with Arsenal by beating City to get back on track in the Premier League and fire a warning to the other teams chasing Champions League football.

A flashpoint which led to a very quick VAR check happened in the first half, when Anderson tackled Foden and followed through, catching the player on his knee.

Chris Kavanagh simply saw Anderson win a strong tackle with momentum and VAR concurred with the check being completed and the match continuing quickly.

Lescott – formerly of Manchester City – felt that Forest were extremely lucky over the incident and made a bizarre claim live on TNT Sports.

He said: “I initially thought it was contact from a block tackle but there is one image where I’m not quite sure over his intent, I know it was deemed a natural reaction but to me he’s lifted his foot into the leg of Phil Foden so it’s not as normal as it may appear.”

Lescott’s comments probably highlight that it’s a flawed argument when suggesting former players should be used to help match officials when it comes to making VAR decisions.

Anderson’s challenge was never ever a foul and Foden almost got hurt because he actually didn’t go into the challenge as full-blooded as the Forest midfielder did.

The Reds fought tooth and nail to get Anderson to the club in the summer. Very few would have predicted the impact he’s had on the club and it’s been great to watch him develop as a player.

Forest have tied Anderson down for several years and right now, he’s probably the best performing midfielder at the club with his performance against City showing maturity beyond his tender years.
