Championship vacancy about to pop up for former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper and fans would ‘love’ him

Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has been out of work since November last year, when he was sacked by Leicester City.

Steve Cooper is still adored on the red side of the East Midlands, and Nottingham Forest fans have wished him well ever since he left.

Many felt the Welshman was harshly treated by Leicester, who brought in Ruud van Nistelrooy to replace him whilst they were outside of the relegation zone.

Ultimately, van Nistelrooy took the Foxes down and is now expected to leave the club in the coming days, with Russell Martin set to join.

Meanwhile, Cooper has been linked with West Bromwich Albion in recent weeks, with reports suggesting he’s the frontrunner, though, that’s since gone quiet.

Now, another Championship vacancy is about to pop up, and fans really want the former Forest boss to be appointed.

Bristol City job opens up for former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper

It looks like Cooper’s next job will be at a Championship club, with the Leicester sacking damaging his reputation a little, even if it was unjust.

With that said, there is about to be an opening at Bristol City, as BBC Sport journalist Nick Mashiter reports that manager Liam Manning is set to join Norwich City.

Already, Bristol fans are turning their attention to Manning’s successor, and many really want Cooper in charge at Ashton Gate, but they aren’t convinced he’d be open to joining.

“I’d get Steve Cooper in if Manning goes,” @joejones1897 posted.

“Yeah would be great but I’d say he commands a high wage and would want plenty to spend,” @Pomredoz added.

@BigZombieMonkey explained: “Wouldn’t we all love this but I don’t think we could afford him, nor would he look at us and see a desirable job. No ability to spend without selling, a DoF who is clueless. I don’t see it’s getting anyone with an already proven record, up-and-comer more likely.”

“Looks like Liam Manning is off to Norwich. So #BristolCity, who should our next manager be. I would take Steve Cooper,” @LucaFortuna123 said.

“I’d be absolutely gutted if/when Manning goes, more along the lines of we stood by you during your hardest time and now you jump ship…. Especially after the season we’ve had. Mousinho or Cooper for me, Dyche/Martin too much of a style difference,” @DannyJVeale commented.

@BCFC_Supporters said: “I think Martin is going Leicester – Cooper could be a good shout but can’t see it.”

Middlesbrough remains a possible option for Cooper

There has been speculation about Michael Carrick’s future at Middlesbrough after his side failed to make the play-offs despite being backed significantly in January.

There’s not yet been word on whether Carrick will leave, but Boro fans are keen for Cooper to replace the former Manchester United interim.

Cooper certainly has options ahead of him, although, perhaps he’ll wait for a Premier League job to open up next season.

Sean Dyche did similar when he was sacked by Burnley, and sure enough, Everton came knocking when they were in a relegation battle.
