Jamie Carragher has never been one to pull his punches when it comes to his punditry.
Whether talking about Liverpool or the other 19 Premier League clubs, the 47-year-old always says it as he sees it.
At the end of the 2024/25 season, for instance, Carragher gave his opinion that Nottingham Forest’s campaign wasn’t a fluke because of the “really good players” in the Forest first-team squad.
However, he has since made a more recent comment about the club that belies his expert knowledge of the game.
Jamie Carragher claims no club has won the Champions League more than their domestic league title
On the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast (at 16:48), Gary Neville asked the question of whether it was harder to win the Premier League or the Champions League.
Jamie Carragher didn’t hesitate with his response, immediately stating: “Champions League. Simple.”
Carragher reasoned that “Liverpool have won the Premier League 20 times and the European Cup six times. Manchester United have won the league 20 times. They’ve won the European Cup three times.”
It was here that the former Champions League winner made his blunder, however, arguing that “no team has won the European Cup more than their own [domestic] league. Simple.”
With Nottingham Forest, that is not the case.
The Reds’ sole top-flight title came in the 1977-78 season, for which they qualified for the 1978-79 European Cup.
After winning that trophy, they qualified for the European Cup for a second consecutive season, winning the competition again in 1979-80.
The club have therefore won what is now the modern-day Champions League more times than they have won the English top-flight trophy.
In all fairness, it did seem as though Carragher was about to correct himself on the podcast, but he was interrupted before the conversation moved elsewhere.
Nottingham Forest are the only European club to have won the Champions League more than their domestic league title
In their achievement of winning two European Cups compared to one league title, Nottingham Forest stand alone.
Indeed, no other club in Europe has won the European Cup more times than their own domestic league title.
| Team | English league titles | European Cups/Champions Leagues |
| Liverpool | 20 | 6 |
| Manchester United | 20 | 3 |
| Manchester City | 9 | 1 |
| Aston Villa | 7 | 1 |
| Chelsea | 6 | 2 |
| Nottingham Forest | 1 | 2 |
Of the English sides to have won both, Chelsea are the closest to bridging that gap, having won six top-flight titles and two Champions Leagues.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa have won the old Division One trophy seven times alongside their sole European Cup triumph in 1982.
Manchester City are the side who have most recently joined this exclusive list, adding the Champions League in 2023 to their nine top-flight trophies.
Nottingham Forest therefore stand alone, both in England and Europe.
