Watch out Taiwo Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest make ‘concrete enquiry’ for Champions League finalist

Nottingham Forest will be stepping up their efforts to bring new signings to the club in the coming weeks.

The Reds are in the UEFA Conference League next season, and that will largely be viewed as a competition that the team can genuinely compete in and possibly win.

Forest need a better squad, though, with Nuno Espirito Santo watching on as his team ran out of steam in the quest for a Champions League place last season.

Firepower is going to be the order of the day with more goals required across the squad next season.

Chris Wood bagged 20 last season, but Forest have moved to bring in Igor Jesus, with the player set to join after the Club World Cup, which is currently taking place in the United States.

Nottingham Forest make enquiry for Mehdi Taremi

With Jesus and Wood likely to share the majority of the responsibility for goals in the Forest team, a backup option for those two might be sought.

According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Forest have made a concrete enquiry for Iran international Taremi, who is currently with Inter.

The 32-year-old was on the bench as Inter lost the Champions League final to PSG back in May and could depart the San Siro this summer.

He’s played 43 times for Inter in total, scoring three goals and registering nine assists since checking in from Porto 12 months ago.

Taremi is a big deal in his home country and with 53 goals in 93 appearances on the international stage, he will be keen to play next year with the World Cup on the horizon.

Right now, Awoniyi is recovering from a serious intestinal injury which occurred when he collided with a goal post during the 2-2 draw against Leicester.

However, the future for Awoniyi might not be at Forest, especially if another striker is signed to provide competition for Wood and Jesus.

The talisman was the first signing following promotion to the Premier League in 2022, and without his 11 goals during that season, the Reds would have returned to the EFL.

However, with European football on the table and a lack of game time last season, perhaps the time is right for Forest to offload Awoniyi this summer.

Given his previous record of scoring goals in the Bundesliga, clubs across Europe could well be keen and if offers are forthcoming, it could be curtains for Awoniyi at Forest.
