Nottingham Forest will look to replace Anthony Elanga in the squad but currently, Jota Silva is the only senior right winger available to Nuno Espírito Santo.

Elanga’s move to Newcastle United was confirmed on Friday evening after weeks of negotiation, with Forest banking £55m upfront for Elanga plus add-ons.

His sale meant that, going into Forest’s first pre-season friendly against Chesterfield, Jota Silva was the only real option available to Espírito Santo to start the match.

The game finished 0-0 in what will mostly be remembered as a valuable fitness exercise, but onlooking Forest fans were quick to voice their concerns about the display of the Portuguese winger.

Nottingham Forest fans share concerns over Jota Silva display

Jota was one of only four players to play 60 minutes against Chesterfield, alongside first-team regulars Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ryan Yates.

With those minutes against League 2 opposition, you’d like to think that Jota would produce some sort of attacking output to excite Reds fans, but it was not to be as supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on his afternoon’s work.

One fan said: “We sold Sosa and kept Jota Silva…” Another added: “Sosa was miles better than Jota Silva and got 1/3 of the opportunities that Silva had.”

Another fan cheekily tagged the official Lyon account in a post and said: “Do you want Jota Silva?” With another saying: “Sosa got half the amount of time he did and was still way better.”

Jota Silva didn’t do himself any favours against Chesterfield

While he did look lively, the quality was lacking from the 25-year-old as Forest laboured to a goalless draw in their first outing in the new 25/26 home kit.

As suggested by the fans’ comments, Jota fits into a similar category as Ramon Sosa and with Sosa departing for Palmeiras, the Portuguese star’s future also feels uncertain.

Nottingham Forest News revealed that Forest want to keep Jota in the squad unless a significant bid was made, but Espírito Santo will need to see more from him to justify solid minutes in what will be a busy season.

Especially given the news that Forest have been promoted into the Europa League, the whole squad will need to show their worth in pre-season to hit the ground running on all fronts this season.
