Nottingham Forest have had a mixed start to the Premier League campaign, with the international break a chance for a reset for Nuno Espírito Santo.
After Forest beat Brentford 3-1 on the opening day, all looked well at the City Ground, but things have become more complicated as August drew on.
The breakdown of Edu and Espírito Santo’s relationship has cast doubt over the manager’s future, which wasn’t helped by Forest’s 3-0 defeat to West Ham to end the month.
Now, with a break from club football, Reds fans can look forward to seeing some of their top stars grace the international stage, including two in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

England – Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson
- England vs Andorra – September 6, 5pm BST
- Serbia vs England – September 9, 7:45pm BST
Undoubtedly the highlight of the international squad announcements, Elliot Anderson earned his first senior England call-up after a brilliant period for the under-21s.
To ease his transition into the senior set-up, he’ll be joined by Morgan Gibbs-White as Tuchel’s Three Lions face Andorra and Serbia in two World Cup qualifiers.
Serbia – Nikola Milenkovic
- Latvia vs Serbia – September 6, 2pm BST
- Serbia vs England – September 9, 7:45pm BST
Speaking of Serbia, Anderson and Gibbs-White will have to face up against Nikola Milenkovic in their second fixture of the break.
While England are clear at the top of the World Cup qualifier group, Serbia have work to do in third spot, so the opening clash away against Latvia will be of particular importance to Milenkovic and his teammates as they look to secure the second-place play-off position.
Wales – Neco Williams
- Kazakhstan vs Wales – September 4, 3pm BST
- Wales vs Canada – September 9, 7:45pm BST
The Forest left-back will be hoping for a better international break this time round, after Neco Williams was injured on Wales duty in June.
Also in World Cup qualifying action, Wales travel to Kazakhstan on Thursday looking to strengthen their position in second place in group J, but with the knowledge that they’ve played two more games than third-place Belgium.
Given this discrepancy in the group, Wales’ second fixture is a unique friendly against Canada.
Belgium – Matz Sels
- Liechtenstein vs Belgium – September 4, 7:45pm BST
- Belgium vs Kazakhstan – September 7, 7:45pm BST
Matz Sels and Belgium are playing catch-up in group J, having only played two qualifying fixtures. The Red Devils will be aiming for maximum points from their two games against Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan, who are both struggling in the group.
Scotland – Angus Gunn
- Denmark vs Scotland – September 5, 7:45pm BST
- Belarus vs Scotland – September 8, 7:45pm BST
Gunn signed for Forest as a third-choice goalkeeper, but he may have a better chance of featuring for Scotland in their two World Cup qualifiers.
The number one shirt is up for grabs for Scotland, who begin their quest to qualify out of group C by facing the favourites in Denmark, before an easier trip to Belarus.
Switzerland – Dan Ndoye
- Switzerland vs Kosovo – September 5, 7:45pm BST
- Switzerland vs Slovenia – September 8, 7:45pm BST
Forest’s new man on the right, Dan Ndoye, will hope to lead Switzerland into the 2026 World Cup, starting with their opening two group A qualifying fixtures.
A group with Sweden, Slovenia and Kosovo is fairly evenly matched, so Ndoye’s side will want to hit the ground running in September.
Ukraine – Oleksandr Zinchenko
- Ukraine vs France – September 5, 7:45pm BST
- Azerbaijan vs Ukraine – September 9, 5pm BST
In a last-minute deadline-day deal, Forest signed Oleksandr Zinchenko as competition for Williams at left-back. The Reds’ first glimpse of their new man will come when he faces France on Friday.
Zinchenko and Ukraine will then travel to face Azerbaijan, as group D of the World Cup qualifiers gets underway.
Nigeria – Ola Aina
- Nigeria vs Rwanda – September 6, 5pm BST
- South Africa vs Nigeria – September 9, 5pm BST
Nigeria and Ola Aina have plenty of work to do to qualify for the World Cup. In group C in the CAF qualifying section, Nigeria sit in fourth place, six points off top spot.
More importantly, they are level on points with second-place Rwanda, who they face first before travelling to take on table-topping South Africa, both looking like must-win games.
Ivory Coast – Ibrahim Sangare
- Ivory Coast vs Burundi – September 5, 8pm BST
- Gabon vs Ivory Coast – September 9, 8pm BST
For Sangare and the Ivory Coast, things look much simpler as they are in a great position to qualify in top spot in group F.
However, September could change things as they face second and third in Burundi and Gabon, knowing that defeats could be costly.

New Zealand – Chris Wood
- Australia vs New Zealand – September 5, 10:45am BST
- New Zealand vs Australia – September 9, 8am BST
New Zealand have already qualified for the World Cup, so Chris Wood faces back-to-back friendlies against neighbours Australia over the international break.
England U20s – Zach Abbott
- England U20 vs Italy U20 – September 5, 7:30pm BST
Zach Abbott featured at the U19 Euros over the summer and will now step up an age group, facing Italy with the U20s in Chesterfield.
Brazil U20s – Jair Cunha
There are no fixtures scheduled for Jair Cunha and the Brazil U20s. However, they’ll likely be preparing for the U20 World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off in Chile on September 27.
