Paul Hart has shared the situation that happened to Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest that left him down in the dumps.
Clough won everything there was to win minus the FA Cup with Forest, and it’s fair to say they should have won that title in 1991 when a Roger Milford-inspired Tottenham won the trophy.
Forest won two European Cups, beating tonight’s Europa League opponents, Malmö, in 1979 and Hamburg 12 months later to retain the famous trophy.
Hart wasn’t at the club for those campaigns, but it was another European adventure that admits to this day, still leaves him disgusted – and he claims Clough felt the same.

Paul Hart shares which Forest moment disgusted him
Forest were left shellshocked in 1984 when a fateful night against Anderlecht occurred, when the Reds were quite literally robbed during a highly controversial defeat.
A third European trophy escaped the clutches of Forest when a late penalty and a disallowed Hart goal ensured a 2-0 win for Anderlecht, denying Forest a final against Tottenham.
In 1997 it came to light that Anderlecht’s chairman, Constant Vanden Stock, paid £27,000 to the referee, Emilio Guruceta Muro, in exchange for his help in fixing the match.
Hart has confessed that he’s still annoyed to this day and has also shared exactly how Clough was feeling after the contest.
He told The Telegraph: “I still feel disgusted. If this had happened to a club like Man City now, the football world would have been decimated. How that club can still have the stadium named after Vanden Stock is absolutely scandalous.
“I would have got my first medal. Cloughie would have got another trophy, because we’d have fancied ourselves against Spurs in a two-legged final. That’s all you work towards in your career.
“Brian was very quiet. It could have been disappointment, but I just think he knew. There’s still nothing been done. Absolutely diddly squat.”
Forest can make positive memories in Europe this season
Although Forest’s place in the knockout stage is far from confirmed, with four games to go, it’s still all to play for.
The Reds have good fixtures left to play, and with Dyche seemingly starting to get a tune out of the team, there are lots of reasons to be cheerful.
Forest are a club that used to be regulars in European competition, and Evangelos Marinakis won’t win this Europa League foray to be a one-time thing.
Is Brian Clough the greatest manager of all time?
Hart is still extremely fond of his former club and he will be hoping that Forest can go far in the competition too, much like the other former legends from yesteryear.
It’s hard to imagine Clough being too down in the dumps about anything but as Hart shares with this anecdote, it was a tough loss for both him and his team to take.
