Sean Dyche explains why he picked John Victor for Nottingham Forest clash vs Fulham

John Victor kept his place in the Nottingham Forest goal for last night’s trip to Fulham.

It meant a third consecutive outing for Victor after he played against FC Utrecht and Tottenham as Forest claimed two big wins.

Victor wasn’t really tested against Fulham but did concede the game’s only goal when Raul Jimenez stroked his first-half penalty beyond the Brazilian.

With Matz Sels returning to the bench last night, he might have fancied having a bit more to do between the posts and Sean Dyche now has a conundrum before the weekend’s clash with Manchester City.

Why Sean Dyche picked Forest goalkeeper John Victor

Although Sels was fit enough for the bench against Fulham, it would appear that Forest are still going to be cautious with the goalkeeper.

He missed the game against Tottenham with a groin problem, and after returning to the squad, Dyche was asked why he chose to go with Victor between the posts instead.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: “John has done really well in the two games, to be fair. Matz has only had four days of training.

“He has a bad finger he was playing through and a groin problem, so we have to be careful with that. But John has earned the right for this one, that’s for sure, with two very strong performances.”

Victor should keep place for Manchester City

Although Sels was brilliant last season, Victor hasn’t really done a great deal wrong to warrant being dropped by Forest in the games which he’s played.

City will provide a stern test for Forest at the City Ground, and ultimately, he deserves the chance to play in a game where he should be busier.

With the games now set to come thick and fast, Forest have to do whatever it takes to pick up some more points and the sooner the team can climb the table, the better.

It’s hard to say Victor has grasped his opportunity, but he’s certainly not done anything wrong to warrant being taken out of the side for Sels after last night’s game against Fulham.
