Nottingham Forest are set to rival Aston Villa to sign Mateo Kovacic this summer.

The Croatian midfielder is set to leave City and could actually be collateral damage in the deal, which should see Elliot Anderson eventually swap the City Ground for the Etihad Stadium.

Forest have been linked with Lucas Bergvall from Tottenham as a replacement, but perhaps the Swede won’t be the only one to check in on Trentside when it comes to the midfield engine room.

Kovacic is a proven winner, but his time at City looks set to be coming to an end. He checked in at the Etihad Stadium from Chelsea in 2023 and has helped the Citizens to a number of titles.

In 2025/26, Kovacic wasn’t considered a first-choice member of the team, making just nine appearances in all competitions after struggling with injury for large parts of the campaign.

Forest experience could be key next season

Vitor Pereira is keen to add some experience to his ranks, and it would seem as though the Reds are going to do battle with Aston Villa, who will be in the Champions League, for his signature.

It’s Sportsboom who makes the claim regarding Kovacic, and it does feel highly likely that the 115-cap midfielder will take some convincing to sign for Forest this summer.

If Forest could get a deal for the four-time winner to the City Ground this summer, despite the fact he’s 32-years-old his experience could prove absolutely vital in a relatively young dressing room.

Forest will be leaving no stone unturned this summer in an attempt to boost their squad, and having a plug-and-play option like Kovacic coming in can only be a good thing.
