Oliver Glasner’s first Nottingham Forest conundrum involves Morgan Gibbs-White

Oliver Glasner will this week meet his Nottingham Forest squad for the first time, and there is work to do.

Forest are likely to go in search of signing up to six new players, but Glasner will want to run the rule over his squad first.

Who should be the official Nottingham Forest captain? Stick with Ryan Yates or give it permanently to Morgan Gibbs-White?

Let us know your thoughts…

The Reds finished in a lowly Premier League position during 2025/26, and Glasner’s aim will be to kick Forest on and hopefully compete for a place in European competition.

Glasner will already have a rough idea of the sort of style he wants to play and who figures in his plans and who doesn’t, with his first conundrum to crack crystal clear.

Oliver Glasner has big Morgan Gibbs-White call to make

Last season, Forest had a club captain in Ryan Yates who started less than half a dozen Premier League football matches.

That’s far from ideal, and whenever Yates comes on the pitch, Gibbs-White will often give him the armband straight away, which can be mildly annoying.

Gibbs-White is not only Forest’s talismanic leader when it comes to performances, but it’s clear that he’s the one player inside the dressing room that the players naturally look up to.

As a result, Forest should make the decision to turn to Gibbs-White and further enhance his relationship with the club by making him the permanent captain at the City Ground.

In modern-day football, squads need a number of leaders out on the pitch, but the fact that Yates is hardly going to feature again in the new season makes him being captain a non-starter.

Gibbs-White would be perfect captain

Gibbs-White rarely misses games, which makes him a prime candidate for the captaincy and given that he’s the team’s best player, it’s a decision that makes perfect sense.

🤔For £25m would you take Djed Spence back at Nottingham Forest?

Take nothing away from Yates, who has served Forest with distinction, but ultimately, Forest have a perfect captain in their squad, and it’s perhaps time for a change.

Gibbs-White is the captain fantastic more often than not anyway and if Glasner makes this call nice and early, it would let the whole squad know that he’s not here to mess around.
