Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis’ ambitious plans for the future of the club have been revealed, with Olympiakos Sporting Director Christian Karembeu saying the Greek has a “big project” in mind.

The 52-year-old completed a transaction just over two years ago to become the majority shareholder at the City Ground. He took over at the helm from Fawaz Al-Hasawi, who had become an extremely unpopular figure among supporters.

It’s fair to say that the club’s future looks a lot brighter now than it did then. Even if there is still a lot of work to do on the field, the Reds are now a completely different animal off the field.

Of course, the Reds aren’t the only club that Marinakis has an interest in. He has also been owner of Greek giants Olympiacos since mid-2010. He has enjoyed great success with the Greek Superleague outfit, including winning the league title for seven consecutive seasons.

The Reds travelled to the Karaiskakis Stadium earlier on in pre-season, with Sabri Lamouchi’s side being comprehensively beaten 3-0. The historic meeting between the two sides showed just how much further down the line the Champions League outfit are under the ownership of Marinakis.

‘Willing to do bigger things for Forest’

Whilst Marinakis hasn’t got time to be constantly involved at the City Ground, he still has big plans for the club. This is why he has prioritised appointing the right staff behind the scenes to ensure the club is being run properly.

He said: “He has a big project in mind in Nottingham. I cannot tell you all about it. But I know he is willing to do bigger things for Forest.

“That is what I can tell you. The project could be bigger than the one at Olympiacos.

“The Premier League is the premier global football market. That is why, when you talk about business and football, people know that the Premier League is the best one.”

The Reds finished ninth in the Championship last season, after an underwhelming second half of the season. But the appointment of Lamouchi has injected a certain level of belief back into the club.

And Reds fans will be reassured by Karembeu’s comments, and will be hoping that the team can be successful this season. It remains to be seen exactly how many more signings the Reds will make this summer.
