Former Nottingham Forest loanee Jack Colback would be ‘worth the gamble’, according to former England international Danny Mills.

It was reported in The Telegraph this week that Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce will be desperately looking for clubs to buy the midfielder during the upcoming winter transfer window.

It’s fair to say that the 30-year-old looks set to leave St James’ Park in January. His contract expires at the end of the season, and he was left out of Bruce’s 25-man Premier League squad at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Colback became a popular figure during his 18-month loan spell at the City Ground. He made 55 appearances and narrowly missed out on Player of the Season to Joe Lolley.

Pundit and former professional player Danny Mills has been discussing Colback’s future with Football Insider. Mills made 19 appearances for England during his career and believes that Colback would be ‘worth the gamble’.

He said: “Yeah I’m sure there will be lots of loan deals around.

“We all know that teams at the lower end of the Premier League and the higher end of the Championship get to January and think: “Right, who’s available, who can we nick on loan for six months?”

Expensive

“Even if we pay half the wages, it might be worth the gamble to get somebody in.”

It’s easy to see where Mills is coming from, but signing Colback would arguably be a big gamble for any side.

The 30-year-old hasn’t played any football this season and is said to be on huge wages on Newcastle. According to The Telegraph, the midfielder is on around £50,000-a-week.

That means that even if Newcastle agreed to pay half of his wages, any club wanting to take Colback on loan would still have to conjure up an additional £25,000-a-week for his services.

It’s fair to say that any chance of him returning to the City Ground looks slim.

Sabri Lamouchi moved on to other targets in the summer. The likes of Samba Sow, Alfa Semedo, Tiago Silva and John Bostock all arrived at the club.

There’s now no need for the Reds to reignite their interest in Colback.

However, it will still be interesting to see where he ends up.
