Nottingham Forest were said to be keen on bringing Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback back to the City Ground earlier this summer under the management of Martin O’Neill.

There’s no doubt that the tenacious midfielder became a very popular figure on Trentside during his two loan spells. However, the Reds have significantly strengthened their midfield options under Sabri Lamouchi.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce will desperately look for clubs to buy the midfielder during the upcoming winter transfer window.

Colback hasn’t played this season after being left out of Newcastle’s 25-man Premier League squad in the summer. This came after he had been given a chance to impress Bruce over pre-season.

It’s fair to say that he now looks to have no future at St James’ Park. The most likely scenario is that he leaves on loan in January, before leaving on a free when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Colback became a popular figure during his 18-month spell at the City Ground. He made 55 appearances in all competitions and established himself as a key player.

Lamouchi added the likes of Samba Sow, Tiago Silva, John Bostock and Alfa Semedo to his squad in the summer. This means that there’s no reason for the Reds to reignite their interest in Colback, even if he is available.

That being said, there are some supporters who would welcome him back with open arms.

Expensive

One of the main reasons why Colback has struggled to secure a move away from Newcastle is his wages. According to The Telegraph, he earns around £50,000-a-week on his current contract.

That is a lot of money for any club to take on, especially those outside the Premier League.

Some Nottingham Forest fans have been reacting on Twitter to the speculation about the midfielder’s future:
