Glenn Murray suggests why he didn’t join Nottingham Forest, ‘delighted’ to sign new contract

Brighton & Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray was linked with Nottingham Forest in January – but then opted to remain at the AMEX Stadium.

The Reds never managed to get a deal for the 36-year-old over the line. But why, after being offered the chance to leave Brighton, did he end up staying at the Premier League club instead?

The Brighton & Hove Albion outcast who hadn’t started in the Premier League since September, has now signed a new one-year contract at the club.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Murray was keen to point out that working hard to get himself back in Brighton’s starting line-up was always his top priority, despite being linked with numerous other Premier League and Championship sides in January.

“I’m delighted to commit my future to the club and be part of this project that we’re working on,” the striker told the club’s official website.

“I’m just looking forward to the second-half of the campaign now. All I need to do from my personal perspective is make sure I’m fit and ready to go when the gaffer needs me.”

The Reds have struggled for goals at times this season. They have become increasingly over-reliant on the goalscoring exploits of Lewis Grabban.

So it doesn’t take a genius to work out why Murray’s possible availability had caught the eye in the Midlands.

Murray’s goalscoring record in the Championship can’t be sniffed at. And, with his previous contract having been set to expire in the summer, the Seagulls were willing to allow him to leave.

However, Graham Potter opted to name him in his starting line-up against West Ham United on Saturday.

Murray repaid his manager’s faith in him by scoring the equaliser in a six-goal thriller at the Olympic Stadium. He’s now been rewarded with a new deal at the AMEX Stadium.

Murray’s goal at West Ham leaves him 12 shy of Brighton’s all-time scorer Tommy Cook. He’ll be hoping he can break that before his new contract runs out.
