Sunderland are the latest club to emerge as one of the interested parties in the race to sign Nottingham Forest defender Jordan Gabriel.
According to Football Insider, the Black Cats are in the mix to land the 22-year-old, with Blackpool also keen.
The right-back spent time on loan with the Tangerines during 2020/21. He played 35 times and helped the club win promotion to the Championship through the play-offs.
It is claimed that Blackpool have made an offer already for the youngster. Now, it’s believed Sunderland have also put something on the table.
Lee Johnson’s men were beaten in the League One play-off semi-final by Lincoln last season. He will be totally aware that promotion is a must next season.
Sunderland have spent far too long in the doldrums of League One and a genuine push for automatic promotion will be required.
Johnson clearly sees Gabriel has someone who can come in and improve his current defensive ranks.
Prising him away from Forest won’t be easy though. Right now the Reds have Gabriel and Jayden Richardson who can play at right-back, although the latter is extremely raw.
It does seem highly unlikely that Chris Hughton will sanction a deal for Gabriel to leave without a replacement being signed first.
Gabriel departure: Forest must avoid letting defender leave
After a strong showing last season, the Reds must let Gabriel establish himself in the Forest team during the 2021/22 campaign.
He played extremely well when called upon in League One last season and showcased his talents to the coaches back at Forest.
He has featured regularly in the first-team during the pre-season campaign and clearly, Hughton is willing to give him a go.
Gabriel looks to have all the attributes to be a success and with that in mind, letting him leave now could prove to be a costly mistake.
